About Cathedral Cave Hike

About the Cathedral Cave Hike

The Cathedral Cave Hike is a guided day walk in Golden Gate Highlands National Park. It leads through high grassland and the park’s distinctive golden sandstone to a huge natural overhang known as Cathedral Cave, with pools and waterfalls below the rock walls.

The route is short enough for a relaxed half day, but it has enough ascent, uneven ground and slippery wet rock to feel like a proper mountain excursion. It is best for hikers who want Golden Gate’s scenery, geology and birdlife without committing to a multi-day backpacking trail.

Hike directions

The route begins near the park stables at Gladstone. A guided path crosses moderate grassland and sandstone terrain towards the cave, gaining roughly 100 m along the way. At Cathedral Cave, the dramatic overhang frames waterfalls and a set of pools.

The lower pool is the easiest place to pause, while access towards the upper pool may involve a chain ladder or wooden ladder route. These sections can be slippery and have occasionally been closed for maintenance. Do not assume that they will be available—follow the guide’s instructions and current park safety advice.

Return by the same route to the stables after allowing time for the cave, pool and surrounding views.

What to expect

Book ahead, as the guided hike needs a minimum group and can close seasonally to protect breeding southern bald ibis. Wear footwear with good grip, take water, sun protection, a warm layer and a swimsuit if you intend to use the pools. The cave and waterfall area is not a place to take risks on wet rock.

About the area

Golden Gate Highlands National Park is known for its sculpted sandstone formations, highland grasslands and warm late-day light on the cliffs. Cathedral Cave is also an important breeding area for the southern bald ibis, making seasonal closures a conservation necessity rather than an inconvenience.
