Namibia

Namibia's hiking is shaped entirely by desert. The Fish River Canyon trail is the headline — a demanding multi-day route through one of the world's largest canyons, open only during the southern hemisphere winter. The Naukluft Mountains, Waterberg Plateau and Brandberg offer further serious hiking in landscapes where water planning is as important as route planning. Distances are long, shade is scarce, and the season window is narrow.

For a regional overview, see Discover Namibia. For the reserves where these trails are found, see Namibia Reserves.

Namibia's protected areas include some of Africa's most dramatic landscapes: Etosha National Park, the Namib-Naukluft Park protecting the world's oldest desert, the Fish River Canyon, the Waterberg Plateau and the Skeleton Coast. SA Hikes lists 26 Namibia reserves, covering their landscapes, access and the hiking and wildlife opportunities within each.

For the hiking trails themselves, see Namibia Hikes. For a regional overview, see Discover Namibia.
