Mpumalanga's trails are centred on the Drakensberg escarpment edge — the Blyde River Canyon, God's Window and the Panorama Route country — and the ancient geology of the Barberton area. The escarpment drops sharply from highveld to lowveld, producing gorges, waterfalls and viewpoints that define the region's hiking character. Day walks are the norm here; multi-day options exist but are fewer than in neighbouring KwaZulu-Natal.

Mpumalanga's reserves include the Blyde River Canyon — one of the world's largest green canyons — and the Barberton Makhonjwa Mountains, a UNESCO World Heritage Site containing some of the oldest exposed geology on Earth.
