North West

North West's hiking is dominated by the Magaliesberg — a quartzite ridge running east to west through the province that offers the most accessible serious walking within two hours of Johannesburg and Pretoria. Pilanesberg National Park provides shorter wildlife-area walks within an ancient volcanic crater. The trails here are predominantly day walks.

North West's reserves range from the Magaliesberg's rocky ridges to Pilanesberg's volcanic crater landscape and Madikwe's malaria-free bushveld — the site of one of conservation's largest wildlife reintroduction programmes.
