Moderate Hikes
All Hikes in 'Moderate Hikes'
Moderate hikes suit walkers who are comfortable being active for a few hours and can manage uneven ground, gradual climbs or a longer day than an easy stroll. They are a useful middle ground for people ready to go beyond a short viewpoint walk without choosing a route that demands advanced mountain or wilderness skills.
Moderate does not mean automatic
Distance is only one part of a route. Heat, wind, loose rock, mud, altitude, river crossings and the pace of the group can all change the experience. Use this tag as a starting point, then check the individual guide for elevation, surfaces, weather exposure, access and the practical needs of everyone in the group.
Make the day comfortable
Wear footwear with grip, carry water, sun protection and a warm layer, allow time for rests and begin early enough to finish before conditions deteriorate. A realistic pace makes a moderate hike far more enjoyable.
