Tanzania's hiking is defined by altitude and commitment. Kilimanjaro is the continent's highest peak, with approach routes ranging from five to nine days depending on the route chosen. Mount Meru in Arusha National Park is a serious three-to-four-day climb that most Kilimanjaro parties overlook. The Usambara Mountains in the north-east offer lower-altitude village-to-village walking of a very different character. None of these are short-notice routes — permits, guides and logistics require advance planning.

Tanzania's protected areas are among Africa's most celebrated. The Serengeti, Ngorongoro Conservation Area, Kilimanjaro National Park, Gombe and Mahale form a conservation network that has defined the global image of African wildlife. SA Hikes lists Tanzania reserves with information on their landscapes, access and the hiking opportunities within each.
For the hiking trails themselves, see Tanzania Hikes. For a regional overview, see Discover Tanzania.
