Free State

Sandstone Highlands and Open Grassland

The Free State is often experienced from the road, but its best walking country asks visitors to slow down. Eastern highlands around Clarens and Golden Gate bring warm sandstone cliffs, mountain grassland and wide views toward Lesotho, while the province’s farms, dams and smaller reserves offer more relaxed escapes from the city. It is a region where a short, well-chosen trail can be as satisfying as a long expedition, especially when the light turns the sandstone gold late in the day.

Golden Gate and the Highlands

Golden Gate Highlands National Park is the province’s best-known hiking setting, with short marked walks as well as more demanding options. The wider Clarens area adds access to the Maloti foothills, horse trails, mountain views and a practical base for walkers. Route conditions, weather and trail availability are not fixed facts: use the current park or operator information and the route-specific SA Hikes guide before leaving the trailhead.

Walk for Landscape, Not a Checklist

The Free State’s charm lies in space, changing weather, grassland birds, rock formations and a quieter rhythm. Keep to paths to protect sensitive vegetation and reduce erosion, give wildlife and livestock room, close gates where instructed and avoid crossing private land without permission. A province of broad horizons deserves an itinerary with enough time to pause at a lookout, watch a storm build or enjoy a village meal after a walk.

Prepare for Sun, Wind and Sudden Weather

Highveld and mountain weather can change quickly. Carry water, sun protection, a warm layer and rain protection even for a day walk; use shoes with grip on sandstone and wet ground; and turn back early if lightning, mist or deteriorating weather makes the plan less safe. For farm or destination hikes, confirm the access process, group rules and facilities directly with the host before travelling.

Start with Official Park Information

Golden Gate is a useful starting point for current planning. See SANParks’ Golden Gate Highlands National Park information, then explore the detailed Free State hikes on SA Hikes.

Caledon Nature Reserve

Caledon Nature Reserve is a 3,700-hectare Free State reserve on the R701 between Wepener and Smithfield, with distant Maluti Mountain views, grassland, riverine vegetation and rocky slopes. It is a particularly good option for a booked, self-reliant small-group escape focused on birding, walking, riding or a careful game-viewing drive.

Clarens Village Conservancy

Clarens Village Conservancy protects the natural sandstone and grassland landscape around the mountain village of Clarens. It is one of the Free State’s most accessible hiking areas: a place for a short family walk, a longer scenic outing or a trail-run, with the important advantage that the paths begin close to cafés, galleries and accommodation.

Erfenis Dam Nature Reserve

Erfenis Dam Nature Reserve lies east of Theunissen, where the Great Vet and Vet rivers meet the broad Erfenis Dam. Its roughly 700-hectare reserve and large water body combine dry Free State grassveld, ridges, fishing water, waterbirds and a straightforward chance to slow down far from the province’s busiest destinations.

Gariep Dam Nature Reserve

Gariep Dam Nature Reserve lies beside South Africa’s largest dam, east of the N1 in the southern Free State. Its 16,500 hectares of dry Karoo vegetation, koppies, rocky ridges, open plains, dam water and large skies make it an excellent stop for a few days of wildlife viewing, birding, fishing and carefully planned water recreation.

Golden Gate Highlands National Park

Golden Gate Highlands National Park lies in the north-eastern Free State’s Maluti Mountains, between Clarens and the eastern highlands. It is a park of glowing sandstone cliffs, grassland, ravines and wide mountain weather, where a visitor can combine real hiking with wildlife watching, Basotho cultural interpretation and a slower appreciation of the landscape.

Kalkfontein Dam Nature Reserve

Kalkfontein Dam Nature Reserve is a small 260-hectare Free State reserve north of Fauresmith, set around the much larger Kalkfontein Dam on the Riet River. It is a self-reliant destination for anglers, waterbirds, quiet camping and a simple experience of dry grassveld, Karoo shrubs, ridges and open water.

Koppies Dam Nature Reserve

Koppies Dam Nature Reserve is a 4,300-hectare Highveld reserve east of Koppies, between Kroonstad and Sasolburg. The dam, Renoster River willow lines, mixed grassveld and sweet-thorn thickets make it a practical Free State break for anglers, waterbirds, camping visitors and families who plan their water activities in advance.

Maria Moroka Game Reserve

Maria Moroka Game Reserve lies at the foot of Thaba Nchu Mountain, east of Bloemfontein, where wooded hills surround grassy plains and the Moutloatse Setlogelo Dam. It brings wildlife, water, star-filled evenings and Tswana cultural context together in a reserve that is particularly good for visitors who want more than a standard game-drive stop.

Meiringskloof Nature Park

Meiringskloof Nature Park is a privately run nature destination near Fouriesburg in the eastern Free State, where a sandstone kloof, indigenous vegetation and highland scenery provide an appealing base for a self-catering or camping break. It is both a place to stay and a place to explore, with walks beginning among cliffs, streams and weathered rock.

Moolmanshoek Private Game Reserve

Moolmanshoek Private Game Reserve is a 3,300-hectare family-run conservation destination in the Witteberg Mountains of the eastern Free State, between Ficksburg and Rosendal. Its sandstone peaks, mountain streams, grassland, wildlife and established trail network make it one of the province’s strongest places to pair a comfortable stay with genuine walking, trail running or guided horseback exploration.

Mount Everest Game Reserve

Mount Everest Game Reserve is a privately owned Free State destination in the hills north-east of Harrismith, known not for Himalayan height but for its distinctive sandstone crags, boulders and outdoor character. It has long been associated with climbing and overnight stays, but private access, routes and facilities must always be confirmed directly before a visit.

Naval Hill & Franklin Game Reserve

Naval Hill and Franklin Game Reserve bring wildlife, history and city views together in the centre of Bloemfontein. It is an unusual and valuable urban reserve: a place to see giraffe, zebra, antelope, ostrich and birds while looking across the city, then connect the landscape to the White Horse, Nelson Mandela statue and Naval Hill Planetarium.

Platberg Mountain Reserve

Platberg Mountain Reserve rises immediately above Harrismith as a nine-kilometre flat-topped landmark reaching about 2,394 metres. Part of the eastern Drakensberg foothills, its steep slopes, grassland summit and broad views make it one of the Free State’s most memorable mountain backdrops and, when conditions and access allow, a serious outdoor destination.

Sandveld Nature Reserve

Sandveld Nature Reserve protects the Free State side of Bloemhof Dam, where the Vaal and Vet rivers meet on the border with North West. Its sandy soils, camel-thorn savanna, open water and wide 37,000-hectare landscape create a distinctive destination for birding, fishing, game viewing and a longer dam-side stay.

Seekoeivlei Nature Reserve

Seekoeivlei Nature Reserve lies just north of Memel in the north-eastern Free State, protecting a vast high-altitude wetland and grassland system in the Drakensberg foothills. Its 4,800-hectare reserve includes about 3,000 hectares of wetland within a wider floodplain, recognised internationally as a Ramsar Wetland of Importance.

Soetdoring Nature Reserve

Soetdoring Nature Reserve protects 7,500 hectares around Krugersdrift Dam and the Modder River, about 45 kilometres from Bloemfontein. It is an accessible Free State reserve for a family picnic, birding, fishing, self-drive game viewing and a gentle walk in a landscape of sweet thorn trees, dry grassland and water.

Sterkfontein Dam Nature Reserve

Sterkfontein Dam Nature Reserve is an approximately 18,000-hectare protected landscape near Harrismith, centred on the vast Sterkfontein Dam and framed by steep krantzes, grassland slopes and vegetated kloofs. It is a place to slow down: water, mountains, birdlife and the scale of the escarpment are more important than rushing through a list of activities.

Vredefort Dome

The Vredefort Dome is a World Heritage landscape centred near Vredefort and Parys, shaped by the world’s oldest and largest known meteorite impact structure. It is not one fenced reserve with a single gate. It is a broad rural and geological landscape where river valleys, farms, towns and protected sites sit within the deeply eroded remains of an ancient impact basin.

Willem Pretorius Game Reserve

Willem Pretorius Game Reserve is one of the Free State’s oldest reserves, protecting about 12,000 hectares around Allemanskraal Dam. The Sand River divides its northern hills from the more open southern plain, giving visitors a welcome variety of rocky kloofs, thorny woodland, grassveld, water and big Free State sky.
