The marked routes are suitable for self-guided exploration once hikers have checked in and obtained the current trail information. There is no single fixed Leshiba hike; choose a route that matches the available time, the group's ability and the prevailing weather.
Guided walks add another layer to the visit. Depending on what is offered at the time, they may focus on tracking, birds, trees, medicinal plants or the reserve's archaeology. Visits to San rock-art sites are undertaken on guided walks only.
Start early in warm weather, carry sufficient water, and allow more time than the map distance may suggest. Seasonal streams and rock pools are part of the appeal, but their condition changes with rainfall.
What to expect
This is a rugged mountain reserve, not an urban park. Well-fitting walking shoes, sun protection, a warm layer and a rain layer are sensible at any time of year. The landscape includes uneven surfaces, steep sections and natural drop-offs; use the marked trail network and avoid going off-route.
Wildlife is present throughout the reserve. Walk quietly, keep a respectful distance and ask the reserve team about the current safety guidance before setting out. Check for ticks after a walk and seek professional advice if you have concerns about a bite or illness.
