Andover Nature Reserve

A Quiet Bushveld Base Near the Greater Kruger

Andover Nature Reserve is a small, low-key bushveld reserve on the R531, west of Manyeleti and within the wider Kruger, Sabi Sand and Timbavati landscape. It is a useful choice for visitors who want a simpler, self-catering base with game viewing, birdlife and the feeling of being away from the busiest safari routes.

Small Reserve, Broad Wildlife Landscape

Andover sits in an area where protected landscapes and private conservation land meet. That setting matters more than a checklist of sightings: the reserve offers open bushveld, a waterhole and a road network from which to slow down, look carefully and enjoy the smaller animals, birds and tracks as well as the larger plains game.

What You May See

The reserve’s own visitor information highlights small antelope, giraffe, zebra, monkeys, baboons and a varied birdlife. Hippo dam is a natural place to pause with binoculars. Wildlife movements, seasonal water and the condition of roads all influence a visit, so treat any species list as a possibility rather than a promise.

Driving and Walking

Andover’s roads are described by the reserve as suitable for ordinary vehicles, which makes it a gentle self-drive alternative to a hurried safari. Ranger-accompanied bush walks may be arranged on arrival; walking independently in a wildlife reserve is not a substitute for a guided activity. Ask staff which areas are open and suitable on the day.

A Self-Catering Stay

The reserve offers bushveld bungalows, a family house and caravan or camping stands. Visitors should arrive prepared: the reserve specifically warns that there are no general shops nearby. That preparation is part of the appeal, but it means bringing enough food, water, fuel and other essentials before leaving the larger towns.

Travel Thoughtfully

Keep to authorised roads, remain in the vehicle unless staff direct otherwise, do not feed animals and keep noise low around water. The bushveld rewards patience: early and late light are often the best times for birding and wildlife observation, while midday is better suited to resting and planning the next drive.
