Loskop Dam Nature Reserve

Olifants River Water, Wildlife and Open Space

Loskop Dam Nature Reserve surrounds the broad Loskop Dam on the Olifants River, north of Middelburg. Its mix of water, grassland and bushveld makes it one of Mpumalanga’s most versatile provincial reserves, suited to a careful self-drive, birding, fishing and a relaxed dam-side break rather than a rushed safari itinerary.

A Dam in a Wildlife Landscape

The reserve covers more than 23,000 hectares around the dam and its floodplain. MTPA records eland, other antelope, giraffe, zebra, wildebeest and white rhino among the wildlife restored to the valley. Sightings vary with rainfall, season, roads and the animals’ own movements, so enjoy the landscape as a whole rather than treating wildlife as guaranteed.

Angling and Water Activities

Loskop Dam is known for yellowfish, carp, bream and catfish, making it a longstanding draw for anglers. Boating and other water activities are also associated with the dam, but the water is a managed recreational environment. Confirm current launch permissions, safety requirements, weather restrictions and conservation rules with the reserve before bringing a boat or planning a fishing trip.

Walks and Drives

The reserve lists self-game drives, a short walking trail, picnic areas and 4x4 driving among its activities. A listed trail does not make the whole reserve open to independent walking: use only the approved route, carry water and return well before dark. Ask staff about the day’s route condition and any wildlife or weather restrictions.

Birding at the Water’s Edge

Dam margins, open water, grassland and bushveld create good reasons to bring binoculars. Birds are often easier to enjoy than a long driving list: scan the water quietly, listen around camp and give nesting or feeding birds space. Early morning and late afternoon usually bring the gentlest light and less heat.

Stay and Plan Properly

MTPA lists self-catering accommodation and camping alongside day-use facilities. Availability and the actual condition of facilities can change, so book rather than assume. Pack sun protection, water, food and a basic first-aid kit, and take rubbish home or use the designated bins.

Before You Go

Check bookings, access, water activities and current reserve rules through the MTPA Loskop Dam Nature Reserve page. Commercial harvesting of natural resources is unlawful; a visit should leave the dam and its wildlife undisturbed.
