As one of the largest private reserves in South Africa, spanning over 40,000 hectares, it was designated a South African Natural Heritage Site in 1985. Situated approximately 65 kilometers west of Kimberley, Rooipoort occupies a strategic position at the convergence of the Karoo, Kalahari, and grassland biomes. The reserve's crown jewel is the 32-kilometer stretch of pristine riverine habitat along the banks of the Vaal River.
