Hike Directions

The hike starts from Sani Mountain Escape at the top of Sani Pass on the Lesotho side of the border. From the high plateau, the route heads northwards into the Maloti Mountains towards Thabana Ntlenyana.

The journey crosses rolling high-altitude grassland, river valleys and successive mountain ridges before the final ascent to the 3,482-metre summit. The return follows the mountain route back towards Sani Top.

This is a long high-altitude outing of roughly 35 km return and normally requires 9–11 hours when undertaken as a single-day guided hike. There is no simple continuously marked tourist path, so navigation and local knowledge are important. A guided hike through Sani Mountain Escape is strongly recommended.
