Hiking in the Mountain Kingdom

Lesotho is made for people who enjoy mountain walking with a real sense of scale. The Maloti and Drakensberg ranges hold high passes, basalt cliffs, river valleys, sandstone foothills and villages where daily life is still shaped by altitude, weather and the journey between settlements. A route here can be a relaxed valley walk, a horse-supported trek, a serious high-altitude traverse or a multi-day expedition; the landscape is generous, but it asks visitors to plan honestly.

Altitude Changes the Rules

Much of Lesotho lies high above sea level, and its summit, Thabana Ntlenyana, reaches 3,482 metres. Cold, wind, sudden mist, lightning and snow are possible in mountain weather even when lower valleys feel mild. Build in time to acclimatise, use footwear with grip, carry warm and waterproof layers, drink regularly and turn back before visibility or daylight becomes a problem. A modest route done well is always better than a summit attempt made in a hurry.

Mountains with People and History

Hiking in Lesotho is also a cultural journey. Trails may pass grazing land, working villages, shepherds, rock-art sites, mountain lodges and pony routes. Ask permission where necessary, use local guides or community services where they are offered, keep gates closed and take photographs of people only with consent. Respect for Basotho communities is part of travelling well, not an optional extra.

Find a Route That Fits Your Experience

SA Hikes brings together detailed trail pages to help you choose between short day walks, established passes and more demanding overnight routes. Do not assume that a map line is a public trail or that an old route description reflects current access. Confirm accommodation, permits, guide requirements, transport and weather locally before you leave a town or lodge with reliable information.

Plan with Local Expertise
